Carmel Niwas, New Delhi

Carmel Niwas, the Monastery of the Discalced Carmelite Fathers (OCD) of St. Pius X Province, Manjummel, is the happy realisation of the vision of the late Most. Rev. Archbishop Angelo Fernades of revered memory. This Carmelite House called Carmel Niwas, endeavours to offer the Archdiocese of Delhi the continuous presence of a praying Carmelite Community living to its charism and reach out to the people at large through our Spiritual Ministries of retreats and prayer meetings and psychological supports through counseling and guidence. The history of Carmel Niwas began by the end of 1974 when the late Archbishop Angelo Fernades invited the then Provincial Fr. Basil Koodarappilly OCD to explore the possibility of founding a Carmelite Monastery somewhere in Hariyana. Later in 1984 on August 29 an agreement was cleared between the Archbishop Angelo Fernades and the Manjummel Province for the purpose of erecting a Monastery at Okhla, New Delhi. Manjummel Province acquired from the Archdiocese a plot of land measuring 1500sq. yds. The said plot of land is now the property of Manjummel Province. On August 30th, 1989 the house, now known as Carmel Niwas, was solemnly blessed and placed under the patronage of St. Therese of Lisieux. The fathers continue to provide the Delhi Archdiocese and other Catholic parish churches and institutions with a manifold service of prayer and apostolic activity which was the heart s desire of St. Teresa of Avila, the Mother Foundress of the OCDs and Doctor of the Universal Church.
